DORTMUND „Evita“ heißt die erste Produktion des Musiktheaters in der neuen Spielzeit. Premiere ist am 12. September. Ann Mandrella (38) singt die Titelrolle. Wir baten Sie zum Gespräch.
DORTMUND "Evita" is the first musical theatre production of the new season. The premiere is on 12 September. Ann Mandrella (38) plays the title role, and We interviewed her.
RN: Hallo Frau Mandrella, wie laufen die Proben?
ANN MANDRELLA: Super, wir sind auf einem guten Weg.
RN: Was ist das Besondere an der Rolle?
AM: Es ist eine Riesen-Rolle. In 23 von 24 Szenen bin ich mit auf der Bühne. Das ist anstrengend – auch stimmlich. Und die Rolle umfasst eine große Bandbreite. Die Figur ist am Anfang 15 und am Ende 33 Jahre alt.
RN: Sie haben auch schon am Broadway gesungen. Was ist der größte Unterschied zwischen da und hier?
AM: Ach, beim Endprodukt gibt es gar keine großen Unterschiede. Die gibt‘s eher in der Mentalität der Kollegen. In den USA haben die Leute auch noch ein Privatleben mit Familie und Kindern. In Deutschland sind viele so verbissen nur auf den Job konzentriert.
RN: Woran liegt das?
AM: Vielleicht daran, dass es hier weniger Möglichkeiten gibt, bei einer großen Produktion unterzukommen. Wenn hier eine Sache schief geht, muss man erst wieder zwei Jahre warten. Drüben zuckt man einmal mit der Schulter und geht zum nächsten Termin.
RN: Trotzdem arbeiten Sie zurzeit nicht in den Staaten ...
AM: Ja, es ist auch dort schwieriger geworden. Seit dem Autorenstreik vor zwei Jahren haben viele Theater geschlossen. Aber wenn ich die Chance hätte, würde ich gerne noch einmal dort arbeiten.
RN: Ich habe gelesen, dass Sie zwei Kinder haben ...
AM: ... ja, die Zwillinge Amelie und Noah. Die sind jetzt fünf Jahre alt und leben in Wien.
RN: Wie regeln Sie die Betreuung?
AM: Mein Mann macht viel, und wir haben ein ziemlich gut funktionierendes soziales Netz.
RN: Fehlen Ihnen die beiden denn nicht?
AM: Nein, es geht. Ich habe ja jeden Abend via Computer Kontakt zu ihnen. Per Webcam kann ich sie sogar sehen. Und ich lese ihnen per Skype (Anm. der Redaktion: eine Telefonsoftware) „Die kleine Hexe“ vor.
RN: Wie gefällt Ihnen Dortmund?
AM: Ich habe noch nicht viel davon gesehen. Wir haben manchmal drei Probenblöcke am Tag. Da bleibt höchstens noch Zeit, abends mit den Kollegen auf ein Stündchen ins Vapiano zu gehen.
RN: Sie haben auch mal gemodelt. Machen Sie das noch?
AM: (lacht): Nein, dafür bringe ich heute zehn Kilo zuviel auf die Waage. Aber ich drehe Fernsehwerbespots. Ich mein‘, ich könnte mich nie hinstellen und sagen „Kaufen Sie das und das!“. Aber ich bin jetzt in der Junge-Mutter-Rolle. Das geht. Manchmal denken sich die Firmen ja richtig schöne Filmchen aus.
RN: Zum Beispiel?
AM: Ikea zum Beispiel, aber da bin ich nicht dabei. Ich mache Werbung für österreichische Produkte, die man hier nicht kennt.

RN: Hello Ms. Mandrella, how are the rehearsals going?
ANN MANDRELLA: Great, we’re on the right track.
RN: What’s the extraordinary thing about this role?
AM: It is a huge role. I’m on stage in 23 out of 24 scenes. It is exhausting – also for my voice. The role covers a long period of time – the character is 15 years old in the beginning and 33 years old in the end.
RN: You already worked on Broadway – what’s the main difference between there (the US) and here?
AM: Well, there isn’t such a big difference regarding the final result. The mentality of the colleagues is different. In the US, people have their private lifes with family and children. In Germany, many people are only focusing on their jobs.
RN: Why is that?
AM: Maybe, because they have less opportunities to play in big productions, here in Germany. If something goes wrong here, you have to wait two years. In the US, nobody cares – you just go to the next audition.
RN: Nevertheless you’re not working in the States right now…
AM: Yes, it became harder there as well. Since the Writers' strike, many theaters closed down. But if I’ll get another chance, I’d love to work there again.
RN: I read that you have two children…
AM: …yes, twins – Amelie and Noah. They’re five years old now and live in Vienna.
RN: How do you manage to take care of them?
AM: My husband helps a lot and we have a pretty good working support system.
RN: Don’t you miss them?
AM: No, it’s alright. I stay in touch with them every evening via the computer. I’m even able to see them with a webcam. And I read them „Die kleine Hexe“ ("The little witch“) via Skype .
RN: How do you like Dortmund?
AM: I haven’t seen much of it yet, we sometimes have 3 rehearsal-units a day. There’s only enough time to go to Vapiano (restaurant) with some colleagues in the evening.
RN: You worked as a model. Do you still do that?
AM: (laughs) No, I’m 10 kilos too heavy for that now. But I shoot commercials. I mean, I could never just say: "Buy this and that“. I’m in the young-mom-role now. It works. Sometimes the companies come up with really nice commercials.
RN: For example?
AM: Ikea, for example, but I’m not doing any commercials for them. I do commercials for austrian products, you don’t know here.
